Encouraging Dental Health The Calm Way

Dental health is a very important aspect of your holistic health, with the importance of good dental habits starting in childhood. Not looking after your mouth can cause cavities, tooth loss and abscesses in the short run; and in the worst case, degenerative disease and life-threatening illness in the future.

health, dental health

However, it’s not that difficult to look after your teeth - in fact, it’s quite simple.

The tricky part for parents is trying to motivate their children into seeing dental hygiene as a good thing to do, rather than a chore. Over the course of this article, you’ll see some key ways to create a strong foundation for your family’s dental health, and clever tricks to help your kids see the right way about things.

The Foundations

Family dental health will consist, for most families, of two key aspects: at home hygiene, and regular dentist checkups. It’s important for everyone in the family to have full dental care services available to them. This is especially important as sometimes you can’t discern if damage is being done to your teeth - OK, you stay away from sugar and brush and floss regularly, but heartburn could be causing residual damage that only your dentist can tell you about.

At home, it’s key to brush, floss and minimize damaging foods. This can be a struggle to help children see the benefit of.

Emphasizing Brushing and Flossing

First off, the worst way to get your kids to keep their teeth clean is through scare tactics. Scary stories will come unstuck one day, and breed resentment or totally destroy the message you’re trying to get across. Similarly, anger is only likely to provoke a rebellious reaction. Instead, use constant positive encouragement; make the situation a fun one, perhaps with a favored stuffed animal or through dancing and sing-song. Psychologically turn brushing into a great fun situation.

Staying Away From Sugar and Snacks

The key here is to set an example. Don’t be reaching for Starbucks as your go-to coffee; you might be having it black, but your kids, wife, husband or partner might only see the sugar laden recipes and think you’re a fan of those. The same goes for snacks - make a conscious effort to show your family that you can enjoy sweet treats that are delicious and less likely to rot teeth, like low-in-acid fruit.

Dental hygiene is no joke and you owe it to yourself and your family to keep it all in order. It isn’t difficult, though, and all you need to do is calmly and positively show how habits can be built.

How To Learn To Forgive: How Not To Keep Insults

Every person in his life experienced an insult, the feeling of which hurts not so much a wrongdoer as the offender himself. Indeed, it is often also the case that students are offended by their teachers due to a poor grade for essay writing, etc. The art of forgiveness can come to help in such a situation, which everyone can learn.

How do insults affect a person?

An insult worsens life.
Unforgivable images significantly degrade the quality of our lives. Remembering every day the details of the act from which we stopped believing in human honesty, kindness, ability to help and understand, we are doing worse for ourselves, blocking our right to happiness by negative thoughts and emotions.

An insult is a barrier to solving difficulties.
Inability to forgive offences - this is a kind of escape from the difficulties. It's much easier to grow up in your soul anger on a person, feeding his own insult, rather than finding in himself the forces to let go of the negative that sowed within us. In any case, you only feel discomfort from the insult. You can only save yourself from this discomfort by thesis writing of your causes of anger.

An insult is a way of manipulating.
Very often the image is used for manipulation. The one who is offended by his dissatisfaction attempts to cause feelings of guilt to another person to achieve his own goals.

The insult is the source of anger.
An image, like any suffering, causes a protective behaviour. The most common manifestations of such behavior are escape and attack. But, as it is difficult to escape from the image, the attack tactic is chosen. In addition, the image causes anger. Feeling anger, the pain from the insult is muffled somewhat, but it does not disappear. At the same time, all thoughts focus on how to pay the offender the same coin.

If the offender is a person close to us, then there is an internal conflict: “Anger at the one whom I love.” This conflict constrains us from an apparent attack, but we are attacking the offender in our head. The aggression directed toward us destroys our body and causes disease.

So if you want inner peace, try to forgive yourself and others. So what is the technique to overcome anger?

This procedure should be carried out with you when nobody cares about you.

The first stage.
If you have an insult to a certain person and you cannot release a conflict situation, constantly think about it and blame someone in your thoughts, and the opportunity to directly talk with the person who offended you is absent.  At the first stage of the implementation of this technique, allow yourself to write out any emotions that you feel to the offender. Do not be restrained.

Write about your anger, aggression, discontent, sadness. After all your emotions are written down on paper, postpone writing paper and just stay in solitude - let your thoughts settle down.

The second stage.
Writing Answers. After a few days or the next day, sit down and write an answer letter from the person to whom you wrote the letter. In this letter write all that you would like to hear from your offender in real life. Let there be a response to all your claims and questions that you expressed in your first letter.

Repeat this algorithm every other day. Writing custom descriptive essay can be quite long (it depends on the depth of the insult and the number of claims).

In the process of writing letters, you feel those old feelings really, you live them and you no longer need to restrain yourself. That's why the relief comes, the ball of disappointment blows away.

Facts You Need to Know About Teenage Dating in Digital Era

When you go through the articles about modern dating, it seems that there is no place for you if you are a teenager. Online dating is about serious relationships, as it seems quite unlikely that a Ukrainian or a Russian girl would date someone who is in his late teens. You need to have money to send her gifts and flowers, and your first offline date must take place in one of the best Kiev nightclubs. So, is online dating an adults-only phenomenon? To answer this question, we offer you to check out the list of facts about teenage dating.

Online Dating is Not You Piece of Cake
Seems like finding a partner via online services is really an adults-only thing. According to the 2015 Pew Research Centre's teen relationships survey, only 8% of teenagers have met their romantic partners online. Moreover, those 8 % have found their partners not through online dating services or apps, but through social networks like Facebook. But don't start thinking that it is some kind of injustice. The low percentage of teens searching for the partners online can be easily explained by the fact that teens have all the time that they need. High School is not the most time-devouring place in your life, besides you have a lot of people of your age around you that you can ask out. Adults have their work, which leaves little to no time for regular dating, which allows you to get to know your prospective partner. That's why they're much more into online dating, which can be done from the comfort of your home.

Social Media is a Platform for Flirting
Despite not being the platform for finding the partner, social networks often become platforms for teens to express their interest in their crush and for flirting. According to the 2015 Pew Research Centre's teen relationships survey, over 50% of teenagers befriended someone on Facebook or other social networks, in order to express their romantic interest. 47% of teenagers express their attraction by liking, commenting, or re-posting their crush's posts. At the same time, only 10% of teens flirt by sending flirty messages or sexy pictures of themselves. And 55% of teens prefer flirting with their crush face-to-face.

Texting is the Best Way to End a Relationship
Well, here is your big difference between teenagers and adults. A lot of adults start their relationship online, while 48% of teenagers tend to end their relationships via text messages. It seems like when we are teenagers we are afraid to end something in-person, while when we are adults we are afraid to start something in-person.

It is better to take your time and enjoy your offline dating, as you are unlikely to take your teenage years back. While you can ask someone out in-person – do it. While you can star relationship offline – do it. While you have a choice of whether to flirt online or offline, better stick with the second variant. It is always better to have a choice, so use it while you have it, as five years from now your dating is most likely to be limited to online platforms.

Atcharang Papaya

atchara, atcharang papaya, papaya, atcharang papaya recipe

Pickled papaya or commonly known as atchara is one of the popular side dishes or appetizer in the Philippines. It is good to be paired with a fried or a grilled dish like pork liempo and barbecue. It is even good to come with bistek.

Doing this dish requires a lot of time and patience since grated papaya is the main ingredient. But doing this is more enjoyable working in a Stained Glass Sinks.

Here is my version of Atcharang Papaya:

How to Turn your Backyard into a Play Paradise

Television and digital entertainment are beginning to dominate our children’s lives. And with Southeast Asia being the world’s fastest growing gaming market, the trend is only set to continue. But it’s the great outdoors rather than indoors that offers the most development opportunities for your kids. Freedom and space for movement helps develop gross motor skills, different styles of play encourage diverse social interactions, and being in nature challenges the brain and enhances mental wellbeing.

So, how do you entice your child away from the screen and move them outside? The answer lies in your own backyard! Simply create a child-friendly outdoor space that offers a play paradise where they can explore, be inspired and let off steam. Here are a few ideas to get you started with your child-friendly garden.

children, child, child activities, brain development, children playground

Add play equipment

The obvious place to start is to invest in play equipment, such as a slide or sand pit. But play equipment doesn’t need to be an expensive and bulky addition to your backyard. You may already have a tree that can be used for adventurous climbing. Or if your tree doesn’t lend itself to climbing, hang a tyre swing from a sturdy branch to guarantee good old-fashioned fun.

Add water

In our hot sticky climate, playing with water can be wonderfully refreshing. If you have an outdoor water tap, simply connect a hose and let the fun ensue. Or why not install a large water fountain to ensure you have an ever-present source of water play. This will also attract bathing birds - an absorbing spectacle - and provide an elegant, decorative centerpiece that you will be able to enjoy as much as your children.

Create a hideaway

Kids like nothing better than their own secret den. You can invest in a playhouse or tree house, but it might be possible to create a simple hideaway by hanging a hammock in a shady spot, placing a small garden seat beneath overhanging branches, or laying a secret path that leads to a cozy nook. Alternatively, have a portable tent to hand which can also be used for easy backyard camping expeditions.

Attract nature

Let your children discover the wonders of the natural world by attracting wildlife to your garden. If you have trees and palms, they will already be home to an array of birds and insects just waiting to be investigated. And to encourage more fauna, plant native flowering species, such as begonias and orchids, that will attract pollinating butterflies and insects. Equip your child with binoculars, a magnifying glass and identification books and they will become nature detectives!

Create a vegetable and fruit garden

Planting a vegetable and fruit garden together will open your child’s eyes to the miracle of growth and will encourage them to take ownership and tend to their plants. They will learn valuable lessons in science and be able to taste the literal fruits of their labor by harvesting and eating their produce. For a first easy step, try growing dragon fruit in pots.

Simply add a few of these elements to your backyard and watch your child reap the vast rewards of outdoor play, whether it be through physical movement, nature exploration or imaginary play. A host of opportunities await them on their doorstep.

Bagoong alamang is one of the famous Philippine condiments that is sauteed with garlic, onion, tomatoes and pork fats.

bagoong, alamang, mangoes, Philippine condiments, recipe, alamang guisado recipe

Sauteed alamang (shrimp paste) is best paired with mangoes!

bagoong alamang, mangoes, Philippine condiments, recipe, alamang guisado recipe

While most of the times, sauteed alamang is considered as condiments, there are other Filipino dishes where it can be used as ingredients like Kare-kare and Pork binagoongan.

Sauteeing alamang is just easy. I prefer raw alamang that is not too salty and has no bright colorings. If in case I bought one that is too salty, I will wash it with water first to remove the excess salt.

Here's a simple Sauteed Alamang (Shrimp Paste) Recipe that you can follow.

Ingredients:
1 cup of alamang or shrimp paste
2 medium tomato, diced
2 slices pork meat (optional), chopped to little pieces
1 small onion, minced
4 cloves garlic, minced
4 tablespoons brown sugar
3 teaspoons vinegar

Instructions:
1. Heat a pan. Add the pork and sear until brown and the oil comes out.
2. Add onion, garlic and tomato then saute for 5 minutes in low heat.
3. Add the raw shrimp paste, sugar and vinegar. Let the vinegar cooked first before covering.
4. Cover and cook in low hear for 10-15 minutes, with occasional stirring.
5. Let it cool and transfer to a serving bowl and serve.

That easy! Oh, I am craving for mangoes now!!!

Chemist Dad on Weight-Loss

It is more than a year since I started my weight-loss regime. After a year of struggles and sacrifices, I hit the scale from 190 pounds to 165 pounds. It was a great achievement on my fitness goal.

I can already wear some of my shirts and even pants that have been kept in the closet for a long time.

During the first month, I have been struggling and trying different but healthy ways. I tried the modified military diet which limits the amount of daily calorie intake but it seems to fail because I started craving for more food. So I stopped my journey on hitting my goal. Instead of losing weight, I gain more pounds.

Many saw the results of my weight-loss journey. They kept on asking "What did you do?", "How long for you to hit that weight?", "Did you go to the gym regularly?"

To answer these questions, here are some ways that I think helped in putting me close to my target.

Less rice.
Limiting, not eliminating, rice intake made a great impact on achieving my goals. From the usual 2 cups of rice, or even more kapag gusto ko ang ulam, gradually decreases to 1 ½ to a maximum of 1 cup especially on dinner.

Now, I am consuming one cup of rice for breakfast, three-fourths for lunch, and a half for dinner.

I did not remove rice in my meal because according to some nutritionist, you need to sustain it or else it will make you gain more weight when you go back to the normal diet.

Balanced meal.
Balance meal for me does not mean that every meal should be complete with meat and vegetables. I just make sure that whenever I take meat on one meal, I have veggies on the next one, or vice-versa.

For example, if I have chicken afritada for lunch, I make sure that our dinner is veggies like pinakbet or chopsuey.

Fruits.
Sometimes, I used to replace my usual snack with fresh fruits. An apple or a banana is a good alternative for bread.

Less soda or fruit juices.
We know that soda and ready-made fruit juices are high in sugar. If not burned, it will turn into fats.

Again, i did not omit these items in my meals, I just lessen it. Whenever I crave for these, I drink a glass or lesser just to satiate my taste buds.

Green tea and lots of water.
Normally, I drink a cup of coffee with my breakfast. I replaced it with green tea since I am having a cup of coffee during our break time. I think this one made an impact in reducing my belly area.

Taking 8-10 glasses of water is not only essential in our system but water has zero calories so it is safe to drink more than the recommended amount especially on hotter days.

Exercise.
After a month of modifying my food intake, about 10 pounds were shed on my weight. This motivates me to continue what I am doing.

This time, I included daily routine exercise like abdominal crunches and weight lifting to tone my arms and tuck my tummy. But adding these activities might slow down weight loss because of gaining muscles.

Speaking of exercise, one thing you need to consider is what you are going to wear on such activity. I suggest that you should pick the one that you will be comfortable to move and do your moves.

One place that you can check Fabletics. This brand offers a lot of choices on comfortable, affordable and fashionable athletic outfits.

Losing weight really needs a lot of discipline and even you hit your goal, you need to continue what you are doing to maintain at your goal.

After hitting my goal I stopped some of the activities above like rice intake and exercise. Few day ago, I tried to check my weight and to my surprise I marked the scale at 182 pounds. That is just eight pounds from my previous weight.

I really need to get back on the track I had before.

What is the status of your weight-loss goal?

What is Your Dream Family Car?

Sponsored Post.

An SUV, van or sedan?

If you will ask me what my dream family car is, I would answer a van. It will always be my first choice. Why? Because it's spacious and can contain so much, haha. Seriously, comfort when travelling is on top my list why I would want a van like this.

2018 Chevrolet City Express, van, family car
2018 Chevrolet City Express
A van is spacious, hence you will be more comfortable especially during long trips. You can actually bring the entire family along. Aside that you can bring many things and you can also put additional things you can buy along the way during road trip.

However, my husband would answer a different car. He always tell me how he loves to have a pick-up truck like this one.
2016 Ford F-450, pick up truck, family car
2016 Ford F-450
Whenever we saw such pick-up truck, he would always tell me that's his dream car. I ask him why, he told me pick-up looks manly and stylish. He also added that aside from the manly style, having the cargo bed at its back is a factor why he would like to own one. He has a point because if you have pickup truck, moving from one place to another is easier and cheaper. Also, you can save for delivery fee if you shop for new furniture or appliances.

But wait, we still have a little boy whose opinion matters too. He would probably want a sports car like this.
2017 Dodge Viper, family car, dream car, sports car
2017 Dodge Viper
Why? He loves McQueen! As simple as that, haha.

Whatever brand or style of car you have in mind, don't forget to do research first. Digital automotive site like Cars.com will be of great help. At Cars.com, you can find different local dealers and sellers. You can also do research and compare cars' prices, specifications, safety features and a lot more. Comprehensive set of research tools and consumers reviews are available too.

Hopefully, in the near future, we can buy our dream family car. It can be one of the above or all of them, in God's time.

How about you, what's your dream family car?

A Quick Visit to Our Old School

Last weekend we went to our hometown as per Daddy A's lola's request. She's currently with us looking after Matthew because we still can't find a house help. It was just a quick trip because the next day we went home na din since Matthew had a Pedia's appointment for his annual flu vaccine. But before we go home, we had a quick trip to our old school.

This is DepEd CLSU Elementary school where Daddy and I spent our grade school years.

DepEd CLSU Elementary school

There are so many changes but that front stage remained the same. Looking at it, I can't help but remember my grade school days. Every morning we were lining up to have our flag ceremony that includes singing the national anthem and Panatang Makabayan. Sometimes there were small programs where selected students showcased their dancing or singing talents.

I can't forget when we were practicing our Sabayang Pagbigkas piece. It was my first time to perform in front of many people. I was a shy girl then and while performing I can;t help but tremble. Good thing the guitar music background like that gibson firebird at musiciansfriend.com helped me relaxed and made it through.

The building next to it naman was also our old school where we went for highschool. There were changes too but the old building is still there.

DepEd CLSU Elementary school

Then our little boy brought us to this part of the school.

Where Daddy A's donation were. (Read: Re-visiting Elementary Alma Mater)

Our little boy always tell us that his Daddy's name was written on these benches.

He must be proud of his Dad.

He also asked me to took photo of him in front of this Makabayan Park.

And this Solar System mural.

I will never forget this pathway where we always walked through during college days.

Finally, the best part of going home is bringing a box of fresh vegetables.

That's our short and quick trip. Looking forward to visiting other places in my old school.

Happy weekend!

Five Reasons Why You Should Send Your Kids to New Zealand

Press Release:

Filipinos always emphasize the importance of higher education, as it is key to landing a secure and stable career. But what if education can be pushed to an entirely different level, where youths gain a broader and more enlightening worldview, international exposure, and endless opportunities for personal and professional growth? With New Zealand’s education system, this is already a reality.

New Zealand, education

Aside from its breath-taking sights and premium produce, New Zealand is home to top-notch education that produces high-performing graduates. Here are five reasons why you should consider New Zealand for your kids’ future:

1.    World-class education that keeps students mobile

Over 3,500 Filipino students are currently in New Zealand experiencing Kiwi education for themselves, and there are many more students from different countries – proof that the international scene recognizes New Zealand as a high-quality study destination. In fact, New Zealand is the only country in the world that can claim to have all eight of its universities ranked in the top three per cent in the world.

The country also offers internationally-recognized qualifications which allows for any New Zealand graduate to have great mobility, whether they prefer to stay in New Zealand, go back to the Philippines, or relocate overseas to work.

2.    Passion and practicality go well together

Filipino students are often faced with the dilemma of choosing between landing promising careers and pursuing their interests. More often than not, students can only choose one or the other, but New Zealand makes it possible to combine both.

The country offers a variety of carefully-designed courses and programmes that cater to the interests of its students, be it for standard courses such as business management, and humanities or for niche courses such as gaming, animation, or adventure tourism.

3.    Opportunities keep pouring in even after graduation

What makes New Zealand’s education system unique and of high quality is its innovative teaching approach that values both theory and practice. All courses and programmes, regardless of institution, expose students to real-life situations so as to give them a head start in the industry. For instance, aspiring chefs are trained in student-run restaurants and cafes while business management students are given the chance to shadow industry experts and leaders.
Institutions also have their own placement programmes to assist and support graduates find their way in their chosen industries.

The New Zealand government has also recently proposed shifting the education system in to a more digitally oriented one which will encourage computational thinking and allow students to design and develop digital outcomes. This enables students to keep pace with the fast-changing digital and be skilled creators.

4.    Students can focus without worrying about their safety

Parents will be glad to know that New Zealand cares about the safety and security of all of its students, whether local or international. In fact, student surveys show that 90 per cent of international students are happy staying in New Zealand. New Zealand is the most peaceful English-speaking country in the world, and it is the very first country to adopt a strict Code of Practice for the care of international students. Updated in the past year to support the rising number of international students in New Zealand, the Code sets out minimum standards of advice and care for students, and provides them with guidelines to adhere to should they have concerns about the treatment they are receiving.

To further enhance the safety and overall experience of international students, New Zealand’s Ministry for Education had also recently released the country’s first International Student Well-being Strategy. The strategy focuses on four areas that make up the international student experience in New Zealand: economic well-being, education, health and well-being, and inclusion.

5.    There is an endless list of exciting things to do

Who says learning can only be done within the four walls of a classroom? Taking advantage of the country’s exhilarating environment, New Zealand allows students to challenge boundaries  to experience the world and achieve deeper learning.

There is a number of activities students can do in New Zealand to complement their learning in school. Students not only have great access to the great outdoors, but also the city scene and various museums. The New Zealand environment makes it conducive and exciting for international students to pursue a life of learning.
